What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that focuses on core strength, postural alignment, flexibility, and controlled movement. It’s a versatile method that benefits everyone, from athletes seeking improved performance to individuals recovering from injury or managing pain. Pilates focuses on core strength, postural alignment, flexibility, and controlled movement, making it the perfect complement to fitness or rehabilitation goals.

Pilates complements Georgia's physiotherapy approach, focusing on empowering you to move freely while building strength, flexibility, and resilience.

Georgia is Pre and Post-Natal qualified, so is more than happy to assist you throughout and after your pregnancy.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses your own body weight as resistance to improve core stability, strength, and flexibility. It’s performed on a mat with optional small props (like resistance bands, weights or pilates balls and ring) to challenge and enhance your practice. Mat Pilates is ideal for building a strong foundation and improving overall movement patterns.

Reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates uses a specialised piece of equipment called the Reformer, which incorporates springs, pulleys, and a moving carriage to add resistance and support. Reformer exercises are highly adaptable, making them suitable for rehabilitation, athletic conditioning, and strength building. It’s particularly effective for improving core control, joint stability, and functional movement.

The Reformer is extremely versatile where lots of different pieces can be used alongside it. This Reformer comes equipped with a jumpboard, pilates ball, pilates ring, pilates foam block, weights, resistance bands and a pilates box.

Common Questions About Personal Training, Mat Pilates, and Reformer Pilates

What should I wear to a session?

  • Wear comfortable, stretchy, and breathable clothing that allows for easy movement.

  • For Pilates, grippy socks are recommended for safety and stability on the mat and on the reformer pilates machine.

  • For personal training, wear supportive shoes.

Do I need any prior experience?

  • No prior experience is needed for Personal Training, Mat Pilates, or Reformer Pilates.

  • Each session is tailored to your fitness level and goals, whether you’re a beginner, recovering from an injury, or looking to take your performance to the next level.

  • A full induction will be given to the Reformer Pilates machine if it is something you have not tried before.

What’s the difference between Mat and Reformer Pilates?

  • Mat Pilates focuses on bodyweight exercises performed on a mat, often using props like resistance bands, pilates balls and ring for an added challenge.

  • Reformer Pilates uses a specialised machine with springs and a sliding carriage to provide resistance, allowing for more variety and progression in exercises.

  • Both methods build core strength, improve posture, and enhance flexibility. If you have not done pilates before I would recommend starting with Mat Pilates on your first session to understand the fundamentals of pilates in terms of alignment, centering and control before attempting the reformer.

How is personal training different from Pilates?

  • Personal training is a more dynamic, strength-focused approach that can include weightlifting, functional training, or high-intensity exercises tailored to your fitness goals.

  • Pilates, on the other hand, emphasises core strength, posture, and controlled movement, making it ideal for rehabilitation, mobility, and building foundational strength.

  • Your 1-1 session can incorporate both traditional personal training and pilates- we will tailor it to you.

Can Pilates or personal training help with injuries?

  • Absolutely! My expertise as a physiotherapist ensures that both Pilates and personal training programmes are designed to support injury recovery and prevent further issues.

  • Sessions focus on improving mobility, strength, and alignment to help you regain confidence in your movement.

  • If you are suffering from an injury and require a physiotherapy rehabilitation plan it is advisable to book in a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment prior to your first personal training 1-1.

How long are the sessions?

  • Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes. This includes warm-up, focused exercises, and cool-down/stretching to ensure a complete and effective workout.

How often should I do Pilates or personal training?

  • This depends on your goals. For general fitness, 1-2 sessions per week is ideal. For rehabilitation or performance improvement, 2-3 sessions per week can provide faster results. It also depends on your finances and availability.

Will 1-1 sessions make me stronger?

  • Yes! Both Pilates and Personal Training build strength, particularly in your core, glutes, and stabilising muscles.

  • It’s a great way to develop functional strength while improving flexibility and posture.
